Big Idea:

We are blessed when we are persecuted and reviled for our faith because it is evidence that we are following Christ.

Key Scriptures:

Matthew 5:10–12

2 Timothy 3:12

1 Peter 2:20

Romans 12:18

James 1:2-4

Questions for Discussion

Getting to Know You: What is the hardest test you remember taking?

  1. What stood out to you most from Pastor Matt’s message on Sunday morning?
  2. Persecution in the West looks different than most other places in the world. Give some examples of persecution that you have experienced, are experiencing, or are most likely to experience in your world.
  3. Read 1 Peter 2:20-21 together. What is your reaction to Peter’s declaration “to this you were called?”
  4. How can Christ’s example of perseverance through suffering help you when you are mistreated?
  5. What should people do whose freedom and legal rights are being violated by authority gone bad?
  6. Read James 1:2-4. According to James, what should be a Christian’s attitude in difficult times? What is it about trials that leads to spiritual growth?

Life Application: In what areas are you currently facing a difficult time? How can God use you in and through the difficulty to further His purposes in you and the world around you?
